Notes on this instrument

These two rumbling-pots ( in Dutch: ‘rommelpotten’ or ‘foekepotten’), are very dear to me.

The pots themselves were made by an artist from my home village, Niek Hoogland. My father-in-law, painter Jan Lucker, got them for me, and turned them into instruments, using a real pig’s bladder and a stick, somewhere around 2006.

Rumble-pots emerged in Europe in the 16th century.

The Dutch Rijksmuseum sported a great collection of pictures of people holding such an instrument. Click here to see the collection.
